Ivan Grossi - The ARCA DIGITAL ITALIAN CULTURE

The Ark of Italian Culture Digital

The context in which you want to intervene

The Italian culture, similar to many other minority cultures - in the meaning that is shared by a small number of individuals than those who can count on hundreds of millions if not billions of people -, would take considerable force to get their luggage to the new generations identity if it were put able to "sail the sea of \u200b\u200bthe Internet" with the hold full of cultural objects in digital format.

Quest '"digital ark" would have the great merit of making it accessible through the Internet all the forms in which it expresses our culture and could reach even those who no longer live in this country but I still feel a strong bond. You are speaking of the Italians in the first, second and third generation (or possibly fourth) who still retain, often through linguistic forms crystallized and rituals no longer practiced at home, that bond with the Belpaese from which their ancestors came.

The value, however, digital ark is not only popular these small - numerically speaking - cultures but also from those far more numerous and rich (not just culture). You are speaking of the United States and the European Union through the Library of Congress, the first since 1966, and the Europeana project, which began only in recent years, the second - to mention only the two most important - who they decided to bring their cultural heritage on the Net These projects, however, "limit" the official ball of the cultures (more complete than the U.S. because it involves state archives), omitting, however, both popular culture and not creating an osmotic process between the present and the past to give a legacy to the future.

missing, however, a vision system that allows every form of culture to be passed down to future generations. One could argue that the culture, or rather the different expressions of cultural phenomena, obey the laws Darwinian: who has the strength to survive until tomorrow comes, the others are bound to lose. Unfortunately so far the cultures that have been passed are those of the winners of the strongest militarily and economically, and not necessarily the best. I believe that the Darwinian process is not used here because the cultural value of a language depends not only on how many people speak. A slogan used by the event Futurshow, summarizes the problem: WHO'S NOT 'BE THERE'.

The "Vision"

General objective: Create Digital Ark of Italian culture and local cultures and determination of conditions for its permanent maintenance and updating.

Specific Objectives: The project aims to encourage the creation of the digital memory of the Italian culture through the creation:

a) archive of shared memory,

b) the archive of the agora,

c) the archive of the people.

The three stores are not "logically" separated but are points of accumulation for the homogeneous solutions that are needed.

An archive of the shared memory

This type of "memory" is now more accessible through the Internet thanks to projects such as the Library of Congress.

In the first archive will be available (and in part already is) the knowledge of libraries, museums, sound library, photographic archives, the archives of newspapers and magazines prior to a certain date; the material that arrives to present the State Archives, the radio and television programs (for which no provision is made should be revoked or copyright), the material of the organizations and private foundations are willing to share the documents in their possession. This archive will also host the release of books (in digital form) that have expired copyrights and texts orphans (at least until they are no longer such). The archive may also contain the encrypted version of the works published in Italy (copies of which by law must be deposited at the National Library) accessible only after the expiry of copyright, and the same goes for films, music and pictures and television and radio programs that will become available after the expiration of copyright.

Archive agora

The archive will contain the agora instead track of daily living: laws, rules , regulations, acts of government, the documents of organizations, companies and organizations both public and private that want to make available their information, the newspapers and periodicals' recent (eg the last 5 years). The radio and television news the last 5 years.

The archive of people

The archive of people, eventually, will enable each citizen of Italian or of Italian origin, but also a student of our Italian culture, but not necessarily, to bring "their own grain of sand" on the ark digital through their personal memories, pictures the family album, vocabulary preserved over the years. Through a mechanism of recognition (the tax code for the residents, another code for non-residents) will be given the opportunity to pick up Digital Ark personal history, that of their family, their community.

Vision Technology

From technological point of view you will need to create three technology centers, one for each store, they have especially the task of defining the methodologies and specific standards and governments creating archive distributed integrating existing and supervising those to be implemented. You will need to define (best result from the existing one) a set of metadata that allows you to define first the information covered by Italian archive of reference and to follow all the other elements (see Dublin Core). This will require a consistent set of metadata for all public administrations (in analogy with what has already been adopted by governments for many years the English and Australian) and invite the private components (business and government) to do likewise. There should also allow for horizontal search through the entire network of stores through protocols such as Z32-xx and make available a search engine hybrid (consisting of a searching engine and a directory) with progressive availability a multilingual thesaurus. The multilingual thesaurus will also allow those who do not know the Italian language to search the archive, of course, getting documents in Italian and then could be translated by some "translation machine" or human translator.

Beneficiaries

could answer, in summary form, this question, the beneficiaries are those who have or expression of Italian culture cultural interests and / or professional in this culture is today is tomorrow.

More analytically, we could identify different ranges of use, both vertically and horizontally, in a perfect grid of content where there is a more noble and less noble use of digital objects, but only users with interest and sensitivity and different professional backgrounds. The following order is therefore not a ranking, but only a list of potential beneficiaries.

· researchers and scholars of both universities' Italian and other universities where there are departments of language Italian culture and have access to a vast repertoire of documents in digital format.

· Teachers and students

· Editors, journalists, cultural workers

· Entities, businesses and professionals

· Associations

· Citizens

skills to put into play:

  • Archival
  • librarianship
  • Anthropological
  • Art
  • Literary
  • Music
  • Computer
  • Disciplinary (validation) this
  • ... ... ... ....

The economic impact

From an economic standpoint, the initiative because of the endless type would be a basin of constant absorption especially culturally and professionally qualified staff. Offer to graduates of all faculties a possible outlet professional, time definite or indefinite.
